MARCH 23, 2007
South African
band records in Greenville

The three members of the band
Civil Twilight have come a
long way from their home in South Africa. And after 12 years together the three
members, brothers Steven and Andrew McKellar and Richard Wouters, who were
childhood friends, are recording their first studio album at OMG Studios in
Greenville. The band arrived in Greenville in January, when their manager
Michael Carney, co-owner of One October Entertainment, moved his production
company to Greenville"I was living in Los Angeles and working in Atlanta,"
Carney says. "I had a friend in Greenville so I rented a car and came down here
and literally fell in love with it. The downtown, the restaurants..."
Carney ended up buying a house that day and moved his company not long
afterward.
After discovering
Civil Twilight in L.A. two
years ago, Carney says he knew he wanted to work with the band. "Most
young bands, they need help," Carney says. "But it was the first time I'd seen a
band that I was like don't do anything different. That first time I heard them
play I got goose bumps, and the goose bump factor is always important."
Civil Twilight
had already self-produced an album in their home city of Cape Town, and it had
sold 6,000 copies, but Carney wanted to get them into a studio. There was a
slight glitch. Only two of the band members had American visas. The third,
the drummer, did not, and he was stuck in Africa sidelining the band's plans to
record. "A lot of bands would have been like, 'Sorry dude,' and picked up
another drummer," Carney says. "But these guys wouldn't. So we waited it out; we
got the visa right before we came to Greenville to start recording." That
kind of unique devotion endeared the members of
Civil Twilight to Carney even more. In his "many,
many years in the business," he knew they were special.
Having already connected with OMG
founder Edwin McCain,
and having toured the studio, Carney rented the band a house in Greenville and
booked studio time. Civil Twilight's album is set to finish recording within the
next month. "It's just amazing how nice and professional these guys are,"
Carney sys of the OMG staff. "I never would have thought this at first coming to
Greenville, but it's a state-of-the-art facility."
