EDWIN McCAIN RECORDS ALBUM OF SOUL-PLEASING CLASSICS!
June 24, 2008
“Nobody’s
Fault But Mine” in Stores June 24 on New Saguaro Road Records
Fairfax, VA (April 11,
2008) --- In the midst of a career filled with self-penned hits and time tested
songs, singer/songwriter Edwin McCain recently took a rare break to record an
album of vintage R&B and classic southern soul songs. Nobody’s Fault But Mine is
due out June 24th on Saguaro Road Records. Saguaro Road is a new label launched
by Direct Holdings Americas Inc. Direct Holdings also markets and sells audio
and video entertainment products under the Time Life trademark, which it uses
under license from Time Warner Inc.
Direct Holdings Executive
Vice President Mike Jason said, “Saguaro Road is dedicated to presenting newly
recorded American roots music and when we heard Edwin’s song choices, we knew we
had both the right artist and the right creative fit.”
In what
he calls an opportunity of a lifetime, Edwin reveled in the experience of
recording songs originated by someone other than himself. “For me it was an
absolute blast, completely liberating to be playing, singing and interpreting
other peoples’ songs just purely for the joy of doing it,” McCain explains. “It
was amazing to return to that era and mindset and to really understand the
beauty and absolute brilliance of the music.”
All the
songs were handpicked for the album, with McCain listening to hundreds of tracks
before selecting ones that he was especially drawn to. “I wanted people to
listen to this album in their car, and no matter what they’re driving, feel like
they’re in a 1966 Cadillac convertible heading down a two lane road between
Greenville and Augusta with the AM radio on, the top down and the wind blowing
through their hair.”
Nobody’s Fault But Mine was recorded in the spirit of a live album, an homage to
the way the songs were originally performed with little studio overdubbing,
retakes and other technological patchwork. “We just kind of kept in that sprit
of ‘let’s do it live,’” explains Edwin, “to make it vibrant, just like a live
record, not go back and fix stuff and over think it - it actually adds to the
charm.”
Edwin
McCain remains one of the most prolific touring artists in the US and is also
known for his hits “I’ll Be,” “I Could Not Ask For More,” “Solitude” and “Hearts
Fall.”

EDWIN MCCAIN
~ NOBODY’S FAULT
BUT MINE
September 514, 15, 16, 2007
Edwin
McCain is happy. Life’s been good to him and he is very much obliged.
Millions
of albums sold. Hit songs that never leave the radio airwaves. An
unwavering fanbase that keeps him on tour more days out of the year than
not.
And - surprising even Edwin himself - not one, but two of the most
enduring wedding songs on the circuit, his earnest and soulful delivery
unlikely standouts amongst all the other contrived wedding fare. So when
it came to recording a new album, Edwin wanted to share the songs he
loves and that make him happy, hoping listeners will take a few moments
along the way to discover, rediscover and savor some of the best vintage
soul and R&B songs ever written.
So why would McCain - someone who has considerable talent at writing his
own songs – choose to do an album of other peoples’ work? “For me, it
was an absolute blast,” he says. “It was so much fun taking a break from
staring into my own bellybutton, playing, singing, interpreting other
people’s songs just for the fun of it. Purely for the joy of doing it.”
The idea for
Nobody’s Fault But Mine
had been simmering for quite some time. “I had a conversation with my
friend Kevn Kinney (of Drivin’ n’ Cryin’) about five or six years ago,
who said ‘you need to get a smoking band together and make a soul music
album like James Brown,’ and I loved it.” Then last year, out of the
blue, Edwin was invited by producer Tor Hyams (Joan Osborne, Tricky) to
do just that. After culling through hundreds of songs, Edwin and his
team came up with the 15 tracks for
Nobody’s Fault But Mine.
They enlisted Steve Cropper, one of the architects of the Stax sound and
a founding member of Booker T. & the MG’s, as well as Joan Osborne
(“I’ve Got Dreams To Remember”) and Ivan Neville to join Larry Chaney
(guitar), Manolo Yanes (bass), Eddie Bayers (drums), Doug Moffet and
Craig Shields (saxophones), Quentin Ware (trumpet), Steve Pierson
(acoustic guitar on “Good Times”) and C.C. White and Chasen Hampton
(background vocals) in the studio.
The band approached the sessions much like the originals, recording the
tracks largely live in just one or two takes. “When we got to the
studio, we were ripping through, recording a lot of songs in a short
period of time.” A particular favorite was “T.C.B. or T.Y.A.” “It was
one of my discoveries when searching for songs for the album, a real
gift,” Edwin explains. “And the version we ended up with is amazing.”
Exhilarating “Can I Get A Witness” and “Some Kind of Wonderful” were
added alongside songs like the funk laden “Grits Ain’t Groceries (All
Around The World)” and deliciously dirty “Ninety-Nine and a Half.”
There’s even a “Happy Song,” resplendent in Stax-worthy horns. “Some of
the most fun in making the album was returning to the era and mindset of
the songs,” Edwin recalls, “really understanding the beauty of it all,
just the absolute and total brilliance of the music and capturing the
spirit of it.” Upon listening to McCain’s deep, expressive vocals
belting out the rhythm and blues, it’s clear that he and the songs are
kindred spirits, finally finding each other and embracing in the
reunion.
While radio fans may know McCain best for his smash hits “I’ll Be,” “I
Could Not Ask For More” and “Solitude,” the singer/songwriter paid his
dues in full by touring relentlessly early in his career. After
releasing seven albums and selling over 2 million copies, he continues
to perform hundreds concerts throughout the country each year.
“The album’s not meant to be heavy or overly contemplative,” sums
up Edwin. “With everything
that seems to be going on in the world, it’s nice to smile once in a
while.”

Mike Skinner's
'Round Up' Charity Event Set for Late September
September 5, 2007
NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series driver Mike Skinner and his wife, Angie, will partner
with Toyota to host the second annual "Toyota Tundra Skinner Round Up" Sept.
27-28 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Due
to the success of last year's fundraiser for Daytona Beach-area organizations,
the Skinners have expanded the event to two days, and this year's event promises
to be equally successful.
Festivities kick off 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27 with the "Hoe Down Bash" at
Daytona International Speedway's Boardwalk Pavilion. In the event of rain, the
Hoe Down Bash will move to the NASCAR Busch Series garage area. Skinner will
sign autographs for fans from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and his No. 5 Bill Davis Racing
Toyota Tundra will be on display. Guests will also enjoy displays from Daytona
Toyota and EZGO Golf Cars, live and silent auctions, numerous fundraising
activities and live music from Big Engine of Jacksonville, Fla. Guests can also
tempt their taste buds at the "Taste of Daytona Alley," in which Daytona's
finest restaurants will sample their fare. Tickets are
$25 per person and will be available at the gate. There is no dress code, but
guests are invited to join in the Western theme.
Friday's events include the star-studded Golf and Poker
Tournaments. Celebrities will hit the links at Spruce Creek Country Club, and
then place their bets at the Celebrity Poker Table. After last year's
all-or-nothing showdown between driver Steve Park and NASCAR's Jim Hunter, the
Poker Tournament should be something to watch - literally, as SPEED Channel will
film the tournament.
Participating celebrities include recording artists Edwin McCain,
Stacy Mitchhart, Eddie
Money and Bo Bice (also of American Idol); NASCAR drivers Ron Hornaday, Rick
Crawford and Steve Park; NHRA drivers Matt Smith and Scott Kelley; NASCAR's
Betty Jane France and World Series of Poker Champion Brian Wilson.
The Skinners personally organize and run this annual event, which benefits
Daytona Beach-area charities including the Council on Aging: Meals on Wheels,
Second Chance Animal Rescue, Safe Kids Coalition and Greyhound Pets of America.
Last year's Skinner Round Up raised more than $104,000, and the goal is $125,000
this year.
To help the Skinners achieve
their goal, they will accept any donations. Donations are tax deductible, and
checks can be made out to "HMC Foundation."
